In every great spiritual tradition, there is a creation story.  You have a creation story as well.  Each story starts with an idea of spirit and ends with a human on a journey.  You are a thought of God.  You are divinity expressing through.

The creation story of Yoga is there is something that exists we could never begin to understand.  This is called Brahman.  It is total nothingness of a nature the human mind can’t conceive.  It is before creation.  Within this nothingness lives an energy called Parusha.  I like to think of Parusha as a wise older brother sitting in a meditative stance.  Parusha is the ultimate observer.  Parusha simply looks on and observers.

Parusha observes his younger sister, Prakruti.  Prakruti is much like the Fool from the Tarot deck.  One foot rests in the unmanifest and one foot rests in the manifest.  Prakruti is a show off.  She wants to entertain Parusha so when she becomes aware that she is being observed, she steps off the edge of the cliff and manifestation or creation begins.

At this point, consciousness becomes matter and the creative intelligence or the brain of creation forms and this is called Mahad.  Mahad contains all of intelligence and is aware of itself.  Mahad organizes and creates structure.  The millisecond Mahad becomes buddhi or aware of itself through intellect it becomes Ahamkara or the ego.  Ahamkara has a sense of “I am.”  It is separate.  It observes what is around it and understands that it is separate of its observations.  This is the point of your human birth.  You come to this world Mahad knowing yourself as complete.  Intellect takes over and as you bring the world to focus through senses and you become aware that you are separate.  As you grow, you become more and more aware of your separateness as the layers of maya or illusion engulf you.  Ignorance or non-remembering your divinity begins.  Ignorance is at the root of all suffering.

Energizing all of this is prana.  Prana is the flow of cosmic energy.  Think of it as blood flow on a subtle level.  The heartbeat of the universe or the vibrations  the universe makes as it spins through space pulses prana in the same way blood pulses through veins.  The rotation of the planets change the pulse subtly effecting you individually.

These pulsations of prana break creation into the gunas of sattva, rajas and tamas.  The gunas allow us to experience this reality as tangible through the expression of the elements; space, air, water, fire and earth.  We experience these with our senses and they create the illusion or maya of our existence.

The point of this esoteric discourse is  the minute you were born, you knew you were part of something bigger.  The more time you spent in the world, the more time you became deluded by illusion and decided you were separate.  As a child, you were so close to oneness that you knew yourself as perfect.  You operated from a heart-centered place and made spontaneous right choices.  You were yoga or joined in your higher heart.  That’s who you are.

If you are taking the time to read this, you are in the process of “remembering.”  Depending on your experiences from childhood and life, you may be more or less off center of your higher heart.  Every situation in your life has the potential to pull you off center.  Yoga is the process of bringing you back to center.  My intention for the Elemental OM is to empower you to bring yourself back to center.
