A beautiful meditation practice is called Japa Mala.  You use a mala or Rosary starting with the center big knot (Guru knot) and as you touch each bead slipping it across your finger, you say a mantra.  It is a way to keep count of the repetitions of your mantra.  If you use a mala, obviously, it frees the mind from counting the mantra.  Each mantra is repeated 108 times as a sign of devotion to the heavens.  108 is a sacred number and the reasons why vary greatly.

The most important thing to understand is when you believe in something it becomes meaningful and magical.  Regardless of why you choose 108 as a magical number, it is to remind you of your devotion.  Here are some things I know about 108 and it’s numerical significance:

First Formula: Why do you think you are real?

You have 6 senses allowing you to feel like you are here in this material dimension. (sight, smell, taste, sound, touch, psychic)

You have 3 perceptions of time allowing you to logically have your experience. (past, present, and future)

You sit in duality or 2 allowing you to find your way back to God. (good/bad, white/black, male/female, sun/moon)

You perceive in 3 different ways through the Gunas (Sattic of pure, Rajistic or action oriented, Tamasic or dark).

6x3x2x3 = 108

Second Formula: Numerology

If you add 1+0+8 = 9

There are only 9 actual numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and when you get to 10, 0 doesn’t count and isn’t a number so back to 1.   All is made from the vibration of numbers.  I think computers have proven that!

Third Formula:  Astrology

Jyotish:  12 constellations, 9 arc segments, 9*12 = 108

Western:  12 houses (constellations) and 9 planets,  as above.

Fourth Formula:  Have fun with math!

If you study scripture, you will find 108 appearing frequently.  There are all kinds of reasons and stories.  Explore and have fun.  Find something that resonates with you.
